A Midnight Roll by Sammi Sanchez

OUTSIDE ROLLER SKATING RINK WITH NEON LIGHTS

IRIS

So, we’re really doing this, huh?

HEAVEN

I don’t see what other options we have.

IRIS

I mean going home isn’t completely off

the table, Mom and Dad would

understand.

HEAVEN

Are you crazy? I asked if you were

sure you were ready to leave.

IRIS

I mean, is anyone ever sure?

A shadowed figure appears from beside the building and nods

IRIS and HEAVEN over.

HEAVEN

It’s time.

HEAVEN reaches for IRIS’S hand. Camera closes in on the sweat

dripping down their palms. The two girls walk towards the

shadowy figure. A door appears to the left of them. A duffel

bag lays in between the girls and the door. HEAVEN bends down

and unzips the bag. HEAVEN looks up at IRIS and nods.

HEAVEN

Here, you’re gonna want this.

HEAVEN tosses a clown costume at IRIS.

IRIS

I thought we were getting the money

and leaving. I didn’t think we were

dressing up too.

HEAVEN

Oh, would you just shut up and put the

stupid thing on all ready?

HEAVEN quickly changes into her clown costume. IRIS is hesitant.

IRIS

But what if they know it’s us?

HEAVEN

We’ll run through the plan one last

time before we go in. We’re going in

there with our demands. Make a finger

gun in your pocket. Then we’re gonna

get the money and head down to Las

Vegas. The rest we’ll figure out when we get there.

IRIS and HEAVEN look at each other nervously. HEAVEN opens

the door and walks in.

LONG SHOT OF GIRLS STANDING IN DOOR WAY NEON LIGHTS CASTING A

FRONT LIT SHADOW.

IRIS and HEAVEN walk in. IRIS puts her hand under her shirt

and mimics a gun.

HEAVEN

EVERYBODY ON THE GROUND! NOW!

IRIS

(walking to the counter of roller

skating rink)

WHERE’S THE MONEY?!

Cashier walks toward the back. IRIS looks down and sees a

little girl crying.

IRIS

(face flattens)

Cashier comes back and throws the money over the counter.

HEAVEN

HEY! GRAB THE STUFF!

IRIS bends down to the little girls height. HEAVEN runs and

snatches the plastic bag of money. IRIS and HEAVEN

run for the exit. They then run for the car.

HEAVEN

(getting in car)

Dude, what was that

back there?

IRIS

What are you talking about?

HEAVEN

You zoned out on the homestretch. You

know I gave you outs, don’t get all

depressed on me now.

IRIS

I’m still processing everything. It’s

gonna take some time.

HEAVEN

We don’t have time. We’ll be in Vegas

in an hour. Pull yourself together.

The rest of the car ride is held in uncomfortable silence.

IRIS

Are we there yet?

HEAVEN

Hold on, I need to make one pit stop.

The car pulls into a gas station. The same figure is outside

the gas station convenience store. HEAVEN runs up to him with

a wad of cash in hand. IRIS watches from the car HEAVEN

giving away their money.

HEAVEN

(getting back into the car)

IRIS

What the hell was that?

HEAVEN

I just needed to pay someone off. I

owed a debt.

IRIS

Is that the real reason you wanted to

steal the money? To pay someone off?

You don’t care about me!

HEAVEN

What are you talking about? Of course I

care about you, you’re my sister.

IRIS

I want to go home.

HEAVEN

It’s too late to go home.

IRIS

I want to go home.

HEAVEN

Get out, I’ve been wanting to lose

your dead weight anyways.

IRIS

Fine.

(Gets out of car)

HEAVEN speeds off in her car. IRIS is left at the gas station.

IRIS

Now, where the hell am I?
